SECRET GARDEN is a song written by Bruce Springsteen and first released on the Greatest Hits (1995 edition) compilation album. The above lyrics are for Bruce Springsteen's official 1995 studio version of SECRET GARDEN as released in 1995.

The official 1995 studio version of SECRET GARDEN was included on the Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- compilation album and the Best Of Bruce Springsteen compilation album.

Writing and Recording

In his 1998 book Songs, Springsteen wrote: "'Secret Garden' was cut from an unreleased album I recorded in 1994. It was darkly erotic and centered around the mysteries that remain between partners, even the closest of relationships."

Though not confirmed, it's likely that SECRET GARDEN was written in early 1994 or possibly in 1993. Springsteen first recorded the song in 1994. He played all the instruments, joined only by Shane Fontayne on guitar and recording engineer Toby Scott on drum machine. See the official 1994 studio version for more details.

The song was recorded again in January 1995 at The Hit Factory in New York City, NY, with the E Street Band when Springsteen assembled the entire band, plus alumnae Steven Van Zandt, for about ten days of studio sessions. Manager Jon Landau said in the Blood Brothers documentary: "'Secret Garden' is a song Bruce has had for a year, and again it was a song that he recorded as part of a solo project. And now we talked about it and, you know, what were the songs we use, record with The E Street Band. And I thought this would be a good one. And uh, you know, he thought so also."

A take from these sessions (referred to on this website as the "official 1995 studio version") was first released on the Greatest Hits (1995 edition) compilation album in 1995.

Greatest Hits 1995 Edition

Greatest Hits (1995 edition) is a collection of some of Bruce Springsteen's hit singles and popular album tracks through the years, in addition to four previously unreleased songs, three of which were recorded with the E Street Band in 1995 — Springsteen's first release with his backing band since the late eighties. Some of the songs on Greatest Hits are shorter versions of the original album releases.

In 1994, Bruce Springsteen recorded an album with members of the 1992-1993 touring band. His manager Jon Landau wasn't a fan of the project and recommended shelving it and focusing more on a "career overview". This lead to the Greatest Hits sessions with the E Street Band in 1995. Springsteen called the band in early January to record some new songs for the album and they assembled for the recording sessions on 09 Jan 1995 at The Hit Factory in New York City, NY. The sessions, which lasted about ten days, were the band's first studio reunion in 11 years (since the Born In The U.S.A. sessions) and their first ever with Nils Lofgren.

Bruce Springsteen -- Greatest Hits

Greatest Hits was released on 27 Feb 1995 on Columbia Records. It was commercially successful, debuting at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 where it stayed on the chart for 32 weeks. It also peaked at #1 in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many European countries. By 2008 the album had sold more than four million copies in the United States.

In 2013, Sony Music reissued the album in Venezuela as part of its Star Collection series, which was made exclusively for the Venezuelan market via Sony Music Venezuela in 2013. The album is titled after the series and features totally different artwork. Just like on Greatest Hits, the songs are shorter versions of the original album releases.

Music Video

The music video for the official 1995 studio version of SECRET GARDEN was included on the Blood Brothers home video, The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 home video, and the Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- compilation album. It was posted on Bruce Springsteen's YouTube channel in October 2015.

The music video was directed by Peter Care and filmed in March 1995 in Los Angeles, CA. It consists of clips of a variety of actresses of different ages intercepted by clips of Springsteen singing the song and playing guitar in various locations.

The Blood Brothers Documentary

Producer/director/photographer Ernie Fritz was given complete access to the 1995 studio sessions with the E Street Band, and part of the 23-hour footage was released on the 80-minute documentary Blood Brothers in November 1996.

The video was nominated in 1997 for a "Best Long Form Music Video" Grammy Award. The nomination was shared among video director/producer Ernie Fritz, video producer Lee Rolantz, and video producer Jack Gulick. It lost to The Beatles Anthology.

Blood Brothers premiered in the United States on 03 Mar 1996 on the Disney Channel. It was released on Laserdisc on 01 Oct 1996, VHS on 19 Nov 1996 (the packaging for which included the bonus Blood Brothers EP), and DVD on 16 Jan 2001.

The documentary shows the recording of a full band take of SECRET GARDEN, the same take that was released on Greatest Hits. It also shows Springsteen playing a snippet of the song on piano for the band while they are taking notes. He addressed producer/engineer Chuck Plotkin, "Let me just give you an idea, show you how I was playing it." He then goes to the piano and plays the small snippet, which is likely a glimpse of the way he originally wrote and recorded the song in 1994. The documentary also shows Max Weinberg practicing his parts on drums, with Springsteen giving him directions. At one point, Springsteen tells Clarence Clemons, "Let's use the sax, man," and Clemons asks, "All through this?" Springsteen answers, "Towards the end - I don't know. We'll have to see. Let's mess around with it." Before recording his part, Clemons commented: "I'm about to go in there and do some sax tracks. I can't wait to put them down 'cause I'm like on the edge, and it's driving me nuts and I'm just anxious to put it down on the horn now, you know." He added, "You know, a song like this, I just pick the horn up, I stand in front of the mic, and it comes out. You know, you can't make a plan. It's something that's been written many years ago, and it's just floating in the atmosphere. And it just comes together right now because the time is right, the rhythm is right, the harmonics are right, everything's right, and it just flows. You get that cosmic flow, and that's what's going to happen with the solo. I'm just excited as anybody else to see what comes out, you know."

Later in the documentary Springsteen is seen sitting at the mixing deck with producers David Kahne and Chuck Plotkin and Kahne playing back an arrangement of his that includes strings. Springsteen reacted very positively to what he head, but that version was later voted out. As mixing engineer Bob Clearmountain put it, "the arrangement is beautiful, but parts of it tend to draw your attention away from the song and lyric and what the song's all about." Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits-

Japanese Singles Collection -Greatest Hits- is a Bruce Springsteen compilation album released by Sony Music Japan in 2023. The compilation, which was exclusively released in Japan, consists of previously released 35 audio tracks and 62 video tracks. The collection is part of a 26-title reissue campaign to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's debut album. The series, issued in three waves (25 Oct 2023, 22 Nov 2023, and 20 Dec 2023), includes 25 albums originally released between 1973 and 2014 plus a new compilation album that includes all of Springsteen's singles released in Japan from 1975 to 1999. All audio CD's were manufactured using Sony Japan's Blu-spec CD2 format.

Best Of Bruce Springsteen is a compilation album released on Columbia Records on 19 Apr 2024. The album is collection of original songs spanning Springsteen's entire career, from 1973 to 2020. The release was officially announced on 01 Mar 2024.

Two variants of the album were released: the 18-track physical releases and an expanded 31-track download-only version. The physical releases include a single-disc CD and as a two-disc LP set. Four editions of the vinyl release were issued: a regular edition on black vinyl, an Atlantic Blue vinyl exclusive to Europe, a Highway Yellow vinyl exclusive to independent retailers, and a Jersey Devil Red vinyl exclusive to Amazon Music.

In preparation for The Reunion Tour, SECRET GARDEN is known to have been practiced during at least two of the private rehearsals that took place in March 1999 in Asbury Park prior to the tour's first leg.

SECRET GARDEN was performed one time during what is known as The Reunion Tour (132 dates, April 1999 to July 2000), on 22 Jun 2002 in New York City, NY. On this tour, the song was played in its full-band arrangement. Note that the song is known to have been sound-checked once earlier in the tour prior to the 11 Apr 1999 show in Barcelona, Spain.

SECRET GARDEN was performed one time during the Wrecking Ball Tour (133 dates, March 2012 to September 2013), on 24 Jul 2013 in Leeds, England. It was used in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire, directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Tom Cruise. The song was also included in the film's soundtrack album.

The song plays 113 minutes in, during a scene in which Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise's character) and Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger's character) agree to amicably separate before losing too much of their lives to each other.

Cameron Crowe is a big Springsteen fan, as evidenced by the inclusion of this song in the movie. Also at the end montage of his 2001 film Vanilla Sky, along with the cover image from The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, is the cover of Springsteen's The River.

A Night At The Roxbury

It was used in the 1998 film A Night At The Roxbury, directed by John Fortenberry and starring Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. The song was not included in the film's soundtrack album.

The song plays 68 minutes in, during a scene in which Doug (Chris Kattan's character) apologizes to Steve (Will Ferrell's character). The scene is a direct parody of a scene in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire; Doug says to Steve, "You complete me," and Steve responds by saying, "Shut up, just shut up, you had me at hello," while Bruce Springsteen's SECRET GARDEN plays in the background.

The Lego Ninjago Movie
