TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME

Album version

Oh darling, I'm so lonely without you
I can't sleep at night, just thinking about you
But if I had the chance to start all over
I'd be wishing today on a four-leaf clover
And leaving would be the last thing on my mind
If I could turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)
If I turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)

Oh darling, I can't hold out much longer
But the pain's so deep, my hurt's getting stronger
But if I had just one more try
I'd be yours alone until the day that I die
And we'd have a love so divine
If I could turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)
If I turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)

Alright, come on
Yeah!
Wooo-hooo
Woo-hoo

Oh darling, please, please let me come back home
Your love's been so good to me, baby, and I realized without it I can't go on
Because you're the other half that makes my life complete
If I had one more chance we'd have a love so sweet
And leaving would be the last thing on my mind
Leaving would be the last thing on my mind
I said leaving would be the last thing on my mind
If I could turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)
(If I could turn back the hands of time) If I could turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)
(If I could turn back the hands of time) If I could just have another chance, darling
(If I could turn back the hands of time) Just give me one more chance
(If I could turn back the hands of time) I wanna turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back the hands of time)
(If I could turn back the hands of time) I'm gonna turn back the hands of time
(If I could turn back...)
[Fades out]

The album is "a collection of fifteen soul music greats," as described in the press release. It "celebrates soul music gems from the legendary catalogues of Motown, Gamble and Huff, Stax and many more." Springsteen commented: "I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the Sixties and Seventies? I've taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I've tried to do justice to them all and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it."

Only The Strong Survive was tracked at Thrill Hill Recording (Springsteen's home studio) in Colts Neck, NJ, following the sessions for Letter To You, which took place around November 2020.
