DON'T PLAY THAT SONG

Album version

Yeah, come on, let's get the band going.

Don't play that song for me (Do do do do)
Though it brings back sweet memories (Do do do do)
Of the days that I once knew (Do do do do)
Of the days I spent with you

Oh no, don't you let it play (Do do do do)
It fills my heart with pain (Do do do do)
Please stop it right away (Do do do do)
Because I remember just what it said

Well it said
(Darling, I love you) Oh you know that you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh you know that you lied
(Darling, I love you) Don't you know that you lied
(You lied), you lied, (you lied), you lied, lied, lied, lied

I remember on our first date (Do do do do)
You kissed me then you walked away (Do do do do)
You were only seventeen (Do do do do)
I never thought you'd act so mean

But you told me that you loved me (Do do do do)
And you told me that you cared (Do do do do)
You said you'd go with me, darling (Do do do do)
Oh anytime, anywhere

But darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Yeah darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh you know that you lied
(You lied, you lied), you lied, lied, lied, lied

Whoa! I remember those summer nights down by the shore, as the band played with you in my arms and we moved across that floor. Then darling you went away. Well all I've got to say is, I don't care if you lied. Let's dance.

But darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Yeah darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(You lied, you lied, you lied), you lied, lied, lied, lied

(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(You lied), you lied, (you lied), you lied, lied, lied, lied

(Darling, I love you) You know that you lied
(Darling, I love you) Yeah darling you lied
(Darling, I love you) Oh darling you lied
(You lied), you lied, (you lied), you lied, lied, lied, lied

(Darling, I love you)
(Darling, I love you)
(Darling, I love you)
(You lied, you lied...)
[Fades out]

The album is "a collection of fifteen soul music greats," as described in the press release. It "celebrates soul music gems from the legendary catalogues of Motown, Gamble and Huff, Stax and many more." Springsteen commented: "I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the Sixties and Seventies? I've taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I've tried to do justice to them all and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it."

Only The Strong Survive was tracked at Thrill Hill Recording (Springsteen's home studio) in Colts Neck, NJ, following the sessions for Letter To You, which took place around November 2020.
