Info

WHIP MY HAIR is 2010 song by Willow Smith. See the original Willow Smith version for more details.

The above lyrics are for the live 16 Nov 2010 performance of WHIP MY HAIR on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The NBC show is filmed in Studio 6B in the GE Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City, NY. The song was played in an acoustic arrangement, as a duet with Jimmy Fallon.

Early in the show, Jimmy Fallon took the stage for a comedy skit. Sitting on a chair and equipped with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, he performed an acoustic rendition of Willow Smith's smash single WHIP MY HAIR in a 1970-era Neil Young character. Halfway through the song, Bruce Springsteen surprisingly took the stage to duet with "Neil Young". He was dressed up as himself circa 1975, wearing sunglasses, a leather jacket and a hat, a wig, and a fake beard, and strumming an unplugged Fender Telecaster.

Initially Jimmy Fallon was supposed to perform WHIP MY HAIR alone in his Neil Young impersonation. The song was picked by show writer Mike Dicenzo. When Springsteen's management called Fallon telling him that their artist wants to appear on the show to promote his new box set and album releases, Fallon asked if Springsteen would be up for a skit. He didn't hear back for a couple days, but then they told him that Springsteen is not into this stuff but he would be open to it.

Fallon did a scratch of the track in his office and sent it to Springsteen who loved it and agreed to do the skit. Then Jon Landau suggested that since Jimmy Fallon is being Neil Young from the seventies, then maybe Bruce Springsteen should be Bruce Springsteen from the seventies too. He gave Fallon Springsteen's number and told him to give him a call and talk about it.

Springsteen brought his actual sunglasses from the Born To Run era, "and he goes, 'I got the glasses, I just need a floppy hat.'", Fallon told Rolling Stone in an 18 Nov 2010 interview. "We got him one, and we taped this beard on him, and he goes, 'Wow, that's it right there.' And I go, 'Do you want to put the wig on?' And he's laughing, 'What are you trying to do to me?!' There was no one else in the room. I go, 'Let me shut the door. It's just me and you. Just put the wig on, and we see if it looks good.' He was so sad! So I put a wig on Bruce Springsteen, and then he put the hat over the wig and looked in the mirror, and he was just like, 'Whoa.' And that was it. He looked exactly like he looked in 1970. It was spooky."

Springsteen and Fallon have done their spoof duet three times: in 2010 they performed Willow Smith's WHIP MY HAIR, in 2012 they performed LMFAO's SEXY AND I KNOW IT, and in 2014 they performed GOVERNOR CHRISTIE TRAFFIC JAM.

For his only TV appearance to promote The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story box set, Bruce Springsteen appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on 16 Nov 2010, the box set's official release date. He performed WHIP MY HAIR with Jimmy Fallon as part of a comedy skit, and BECAUSE THE NIGHT and SAVE MY LOVE with Steven Van Zandt, Roy Bittan, and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon's house band The Roots. Before the show, the band rehearsed for 90 minutes, running through BECAUSE THE NIGHT six times and SAVE MY LOVE four times.
