SUGARLAND

Cole Gallagher's cover version

The grains in the field are covered with tarp
Can't get a price to see my way clear
I'm sitting down at the Sugarland bar
You might as well bury my body right here

Tractors and combines out in the cold
Sheds piled high with the wheat we ain't sold
Silos filled with last year's crop
If something don't break, yeah, we'll all gonna drop

My wife's got another coming in July
She's just laying up in bed, all she does is cry, cry, cry
"Tommy, oh, Tommy, I'm so alone,
Tommy, oh, Tommy, oh, won't you stay home"

Pa don't say nothing except when it rains
Just sits by the window listening to the sound of passing trains
Roaring out of the night carrying an empty load
We got a whole lot of grain that ain't got nowhere to go

Well if them prices don't get no higher
I'll fill this duster with gas and set the fields on fire
Sit up on the ridge where the bluebirds fly
And watch the flames rise up against the Sugarland sky

Eh hoo hoo
Oh hoo hoo
Eh hoo hoo hoo ooh-ooh eh hoo hoo
Eh hoo hoo
Eh hoo hoo
Eh hoo hoo hoo hoo-hoo hoo

Info

The above lyrics are for Cole Gallagher's cover version of Bruce Springsteen's SUGARLAND. It was released on his 2023 EP The Confluence.

This marks the second time that a cover of Bruce Springsteen's SUGARLAND was recorded and released, but the first to be authorized by Springsteen. Cole Gallagher, a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter/guitarist, found a demo of the song on a bootleg. "From what I understand, Bruce had planned to release it in 1983, but it never happened," Gallagher said. "I had to reach out to Bruce's team for explicit permission, and he needed to listen to it before I could move forward with the release. I honestly never thought he would say yes. Bruce is my absolute number one hero!"
