The song was first recorded by James Faye Hall in September 1954, and was rapidly covered by Big Maybelle and others, but it was Jerry Lee Lewis' version that found commercial success. His version was recorded on 27 May 1957 and released as a 45rpm single that year. The record reached #3 on the Billboard pop charts, # 1 on the R&B charts, # 1 on the country charts, and # 8 in the UK. Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time placed it at #61. Jerry Lee Lewis' version of WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' was originally released in 1957 by Sun Records as a 7" single (catalogue # Sun 267) with IT'LL BE ME as the b-side. It can now be found on the Jerry Lee Lewis compilation CD 18 Original Sun Greatest Hits (Rhino label).
