WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON©Live 02 Sep 1995 versionCome on over baby Page last updated: 16 Mar 2008Written by Dave Williams and Sonny David, WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON is best known as a Jerry Lee Lewis song. Check out Jerry Lee Lewis' original version for more details. During the Darkness On The Edge Of Town Tour, a snippet of WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON was sometimes used as part of the DETROIT MEDLEY. This is confirmed for two shows:
Springsteen performed the complete song for the first time on 17 Jul 1987 at Big Man's West, Red Bank, NJ. That was a guest appearance he made with the Pittsburgh-based band The Iron City Houserockers. The group's leader and frontman was Joe Grushecky. According to Grushecky, this was the first time he had ever met Springsteen. The song was played once during the Human Touch / Lucky Town Tour on 20 May 1993 at RDS Showjumping Enclosure, Dublin, Ireland. Towards the end of the set, Bruce Springsteen addressed the crowd: "Got a real special treat tonight, gonna be right with you. One of my great heroes and inspirations here with us tonight, gonna come gracen our stage with a song, great Jerry Lee Lewis." The killer takes the stage for two songs (GREAT BALLS OF FIRE and WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON), joined by Springsteen and backed up by the E Street Band. The above lyrics are for the live 02 Sep 1995 performance at Cleveland Stadium, Cleveland, OH, during the concert for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The concert was broadcast live by various TV stations in the US. GREAT BALLS OF FIRE and WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON were performed by Jerry Lee Lewis, backed up by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. The two numbers (along with SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL from Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band's set) were officially released a year later by Columbia Records on the various artists 2-CD compilation The Concert For The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
The last known Springsteen performance of WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON was with Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers on 06 Nov 2004 at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ, during the Fifth Annual Light of Day show. Thanks Jake (ol'catfishinthelake from BTX and Greasy Lake). Spoken intro to WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON [Live 02 Sep 1995 version]: [Jerry Lee Lewis:] Thank you, thank you! Thank you ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get wound up here, I guarantee you. Thank you, God bless you.
