THUNDER ROAD©

Badly Drawn Boy's version

The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't you run back inside, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summers praying in vain for a saviour to rise from these streets
Now I'm no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's bustin' open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We've got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks

And it's oh oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh-oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
It's lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late but we can make it if we run
Oh-oh-oh oh Thunder Road, sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely, those words that I ain't spoken
Tonight we'll be free, all the promises will be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all your boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton remains of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone, lost on the wind, so Mary climb in
This is a town full of losers, we're pulling out of here to win

The above lyrics are for the cover by Damon Gough, who's more known as Badly Drawn Boy. His version has just some minor lyrics variations to Springsteen's version.

Badly Drawn Boy's version was included on the various artists Bruce Springsteen tribute album Born To Run 2003 - The Best of The Boss, Volume One.

A Bruce Springsteen tribute concert was held on 05 Apr 2007 at Carnegie Hall, New York City, NY. Produced by Michael Dorf , the concert was a benefit for the Music For Youth Initiative of the UJA-Federation of New York. Throughout the night, 20 artists/groups covered 20 Springsteen songs, and among them was Badly Drawn Boy who was backed by Elysian Fields on a full-band THUNDER ROAD. Glenn Radecki and Caryn Rose wrote the following in the Spring 2007 issue of Backstreets Magazine:

Damon Gough, also known as Badly Drawn Boy, is probably the most unlikely super-fan you could imagine. Gough, who hails from the north of England, is a proudly self identified Springsteen fanatic. Nerves were evident as he walked out onto the stage ("I'm scared to death and thrilled at the same time," he admitted), and when it was obvious that he wasn't going to be performing a standard, clichéd acoustic version of "Thunder Road" but was going to throw into a full-blown electric rendition, there was some skepticism expressed from the audience - and rightly so. By the end of the song, however, there were no skeptics left, and he received a well-earned standing ovation.
