SHE'S THE ONE
a.k.a. VIRGIN SUMMER NIGHTS
Early live version 2
With her killer graces, and her secret places
That no boy can fill
With her hands on her hips
Wearing that smile on her lips
Because she knows how it kills me
With her soft French cream
Well she's a young boy's dream
And all the girls wanna rip her apart
But French cream won't soften those (her) boots
And French kisses will not soften her heart
With a smile that shines upon me
One that burns just like the sun
Oh, she's the one
Well it was not distance, and it was not length
That brought down that wonder girl
It was a date last night and a lover's fight
That messed up baby's world (In a mixed-up baby's world)
And you were with me in New York
That time we pushed real hard and baby I got beat
You ran and left me wasted
Wasted, burning right there in the street
With a smile that shines down on me (A ghost like dust, oh baby with that smile)
One that burns just like the sun (Oh you were born to run)
Oh, oh she's the one
We hated your ma, we hated your pa
We hated the kids, we hated the cops
I hated the lies and I hated the truth that ran us down
Most of all I hated the town and (for) what they did
I hated the way they made us live
I hated him for his fancy ways
And I hated you when you went away*
Oh, she's the one, oh, she's the one
Now you're back and you're huddled in the corner
And hey, please save me like a child (Where you hated me baby just like a child)
Get back on your feet, come out into the street
Where love was dangerous and wild
Remember all the movies, all them movies, baby
That we'd go see, tryin' to learn how to walk
Talk, talk rough, just like all the heroes
We thought we had to be*
Smile that smile upon me (A smile that shines upon me)
One that burns just like the sun
Oh, she's the one
Oh, she's the one
In its early incarnation this track included elements of what was later to become
BACKSTREETS before evolving into the version included on the album. Often
half of a medley including MONA during the
Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour, this
track drips with lust, of denying a need until it becomes too strong. Also known as VIRGIN SUMMER NIGHTS, some
lyrics also turned up earlier in HEY SANTA ANA.
One of the early versions that were performed live before the
Born To Run album's
version. Check also early live version 1.
* These verses are very similar to the ones that later appeared in
BACKSTREETS.
