SAD EYES / BACKSTREETS
a.k.a. BACKSTREETS / SAD EYES
19 Sep 1978 version
Baby I remember you
Baby I remember you
Standin' on the corner
Standin' on the corner
Of Kingsley Avenue*
With your hair all up high
With your hair all up high
With your hair all up high
With an eye for every boy
That was passin' you by
And I swore for you I'd drive
For you little girl I'd drive
All night long
Little girl I'd drive all night long
Little girl I'd drive all night long
Just to buy you some shoes
And to taste your tender charms
To have you hold me in your arms
For just one kiss
And a look from your sad eyes
Yeah a look from your sad eyes
You have such pretty sad eyes
And all the time almost crying
Cry cry cry
All the time they was crying
Cry cry cry
Little girl they was crying
And me I was so ready to be your fool
I thought somehow that I could stop that your cryin'
Baby somehow I could stop your cryin'
Baby somehow I could stop your cryin'
But I didn't know
I didn't know
That baby you'd been lyin'
Baby you'd been lyin'
Little girl you'd been lyin'
Little girl you'd been lyin'
Little girl you'd been lyin'
Your pretty lies
All that girl lies
And now you're back
Well baby I'm back too
And I'm gonna say some things
About me, about you
And I thought that
We got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to stop
Little girl we got to STOP
This interlude was sang after BACKSTREETS and evolved night by night, from
1976/1977 (where it contained some references to NEW YORK CITY
SERENADE lyrics) to end 1978, throwing the base of what will later become
DRIVE ALL NIGHT. It has nothing to do with
SAD EYES Tracks version. Three
states of this evolution are presented: 15 Feb 1977,
07 Jul 1978, 19 Sep 1978, 15 Dec
1978. An alternative version (unknown date) also exists. This song
was performed massively in 1978.
These lyrics refer to the version performed on 19 Sep 1978 at the Capitol Theatre, Passaic, New
Jersey.
The SAD EYES interlude came to prominence during the
Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour. Lyrically,
it varied considerably, however it was almost always a short tale about betrayal and lost love. The cut of
BACKSTREETS on the Live 1975-85 set
features the SAD EYES part edited out. Quite simply, it remains a testament of
Bruce's passion on stage.
* It was near the venue. "Richmond" is the original.
