NIGHT

Early take 1

Get up every morning at the sound of the bell
Get to work late and the boss man give you hell
And you're out on a midnight run
you're not taking any heat from anyone.
And it feels right,
as you lock up the house,
turn out the light
and step out into the night.

And the world is bustin' out it seems
and you're just a prisoner of your dreams
holdin' on for your life.
You work all day to prove it in the night

The rat trap's filled with soul crusaders
Circus line and jammed with
you're checking with your buddies on the boulevard
as you jockey your way through the cars
and sit at the light,
as it changes to green,
you have faith in the machine
and off you scream into the night.

And you're in love with all the wonder it brings
And every muscle in your body sings
As the highway ignites
You work nine to five trying to stay alive in the night.

You're out all day bustin your rump on the outside,
But tonight you're going to break on through to the inside,
tonight tonight tonight tonight tonight.

And you know she will be waiting there
And you'll find her somehow you swear, somewhere, tonight
You'll run wild and free and all you will see
Is the night, the night, the night.

This is one of the two Born To Run outtakes, of the official album's version. Check also early take 2.

A show opener for much of the Born To Run tour, this remains a much underrated song, yet of all the tracks on the album, this one probably sums up the album most concisely, as its got the vital ingredients of cars, girls and darkness (whoops, that comes later...). Brash, loud and fast, turn it up loud on the car stereo next time you are out cruising.
