LOST IN THE FLOOD
Live 01 Jul 2000 version
Ragamuffin gunner's returnin' home like a hungry runaway
He walks through town all alone
"He must be from the fort," he hears the high school girls say
This countryside's burnin' with wolfmen dressed in drag for homicide
They hit and run, plead sanctuary, 'neath the holy stone they hide
They're breakin' beams and crosses with a spastic's reelin' perfection
Says, nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleadin' immaculate conception
And everybody's wrecked on Main Street from drinking unholy blood
Sticker smiles sweet as gunner breathes deep, his ankles caked in mud
And I said, "Hey, gunner man, that's quicksand, that's quicksand that ain't mud
Have you thrown your senses to the war or did you lose them in the flood?"
That pure American brother, dull-eyed and empty-faced
He races Sundays in Jersey in a Chevy stock super eight
He rides her low on the hip, on the side he's got Bound For Glory in red, white and blue flash
paint
He leans on the hood telling racin' stories, the kids call him Jimmy The Saint
Well that blaze and noise boy, he's gunnin' that bitch loaded to blastin' point
He rides headfirst into a hurricane and disappears into a point
And there's nothin' left but blood where the body fell
That is, nothin' left that you could sell
Just junk all across the horizon, a real highwayman's farewell
And I said, "Hey kid, you think that's oil? Man, that ain't oil, that's blood"
I wonder what he was thinking when he hit that storm
Or was he just lost in the flood?
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts, they whisper in the air
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare
And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hands on his own hardware
Everything stops, you hear five quick shots, the cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
That cat from the Bronx, he starts lettin' loose, and gets blown right off his feet
And some kid comes blastin' round the corner, but a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg screaming something in Spanish
He was still breathing when I walked away
And somebody said, "Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"
I wonder what that dude was sayin', or was he just lost in the flood?
They said, "Hey man, did you see that? Those poor cats were sure fucked up"
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?

The Essential Bruce Springsteen bonus disc:
The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 DVD (disc 2):
- IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND [rehearsal]
Notes:
- The Live In New York City album was released on CD, Super Audio CD, and vinyl. The
home video was released on DVD and VHS.
- Last three (not two) nights of The Reunion Tour (27 Jun 2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul
2000) and a rehearsal were filmed.
- Jonathan Demme reportedly directed an unreleased video of AMERICAN SKIN during a pre-show
rehearsal on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden. Since he directed the IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND
video from The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 DVD, and since the band is wearing
the same outfit on both this video and on the Live In New York City DVD, we can conclude
that this video is most probably taken from this 26 Jun 2000 rehearsal.
- As a result, the rehearsal footage used in the Live In New York City DVD most
probably took place on 26 Jun 2000 at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.
- THE GHOST OF TOM JOAD snippet on the featurette is definitely from the rehearsal since it was
not played on any of the 3 nights (27 Jun 2000, 29 Jun 2000, and 01 Jul 2000). What also supports
this is the lack of audience shots/noise and camera flashes on the footage.
- TENTH AVENUE FREEZE-OUT
is a mix of 29 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000 (first part is from 29 Jun 2000, last part is from 01 Jul
2000).
- THUNDER ROAD is a mix of 27
Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000 (first verse is from 27 Jun 2000, the rest is from 01 Jul
2000).
- IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND from the Live In New York City DVD is a mix from the 27 Jun
2000 and 01 Jul 2000 shows, with most parts taken from the latter. Listed in chronological
order,
- Bruce Springsteen's part is from 27 Jun 2000
- Steven Van Zandt's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Nils Lofgren's part is from 27 Jun 2000
- Patti Scialfa's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Lofgren and Scialfa's duo part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Clarence Clemons' sax solo is from 01 Jul 2000
- Clarence Clemons' part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Bruce Springsteen's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Clarence Clemons' part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Patti Scialfa's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Steven Van Zandt's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Nils Lofgren's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- Group's part is from 01 Jul 2000
- The credits at the end of disc 2 of the Live In New York City DVD state that footage
from only the last two nights (29 Jun 2000 and 01 Jul 2000) was used. However, as mentioned above,
THUNDER ROAD and IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND contain portions from the 27 Jun 2000 show.
- The audio playing over the New York City Serenade featurette closing credits is the
beginning of BLOOD BROTHERS, looped on itself over and over again, with no vocals but with crowd
noise added. The music is the same as the version of that song that appears earlier in the
featurette, which was recorded on 01 Jul 2000, so the audio snippet is most probably taken from
that version.
