HUNGRY HEART

Album's version

Yeah!

Come on!
Whoa!

Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack
I went out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hu-hu-hungry heart

Whoa

I met her in a Kingstown bar
We fell in love I knew it had to end
We took what we had and we ripped it apart
Now here I am down in Kingstown again

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hu-hu-hungry heart

La la la la la la
Ohhh yeah
La la la la la la

Everybody needs a place to rest
Everybody wants to have a home
Don't make no difference what nobody says
Ain't nobody like to be alone
Hey yeah hey

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hu-hu-hungry heart
(Everybody's got a hungry heart)
Oh yeah
(Everybody's got a) hu-hu-hungry heart
(Lay down your money and you play your part)
Oh yeah
(Everybody's got a hungry heart)
Oh yeaah
La la la la la la
Ohhh yeaaah
La la la la la la
Oh yeaaah
Hmmm
Oooh

A song Bruce wrote with The Ramones in mind, but manager Jon Landau convinced him to keep it. It was to be included on The Ties That Bind, an album that was supposed to be released in 1979. When the album release was cancelled, most of its tracks, including HUNGRY HEART, were later included on the double LP 1980 release, The River. Check The Ties That Bind version for recording date info.

This pop track became the first single from the album, and Bruce's first Top 10 hit. The most popular single that year was the HUNGRY HEART / HELD UP WITHOUT A GUN 7-inch that was released worldwide. The song also appeared on other 7-inch singles, as HUNGRY HEART / WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY in South Africa, and HUNGRY HEART / STOLEN CAR in South America, both in 1980, and HUNGRY HEART / THE RIVER in New Zealand in 1981.

The song appeared live for the first time on 18 Oct 1980 at Kiel Opera House, St Louis, MI, played at least 122 times during The River tour. Known to be played off-tour 3 times during that period:

- 14 Jun 1981 at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA, during the Survival Sunday Anti Nuke benefit with Jackson Browne and Gary US Bonds
- 31 Dec 1982 at Harkness House, New York City, NY, when Bruce and others play in a jam session after Little Steven's wedding

In 1983, the HUNGRY HEART / FADE AWAY Columbia Hall of Fame 7-inch was released. The next known performance was on 21 Jun 1984 at The Village, Lancaster, PA, during a warm-up gig for the Born In The USA tour. The song was then played during each night of the tour. The live 28 Dec 1980 performance of the song at the Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY, was included on the Live/1975-85 box set that was released in Nov 1986. Check the Live/1975-85 version.

Played during each night of the Tunnel Of Love Express tour, and only once during the Human Rights Now! tour, on 06 Sep 1988 at Nepstadion, Budapest, Hungary. Played during a rehearsal concert for the Human Touch tour on 05 Jun 1992 at Hollywood Sound Stage, Los Angeles, CA, and it was one of the songs played during that rehearsal and that were broadcasted on US radio. Later played about 60 times during the tour. Check the live 10 Jul 1992 version.

In 1995, the song was included on Greatest Hits. On 09 Jul 1995, Bruce joined German rocker Wolfgang Niedecken and his Leopardefell Band at Cafe Eckstein, Berlin, Germany, to record a video for HUNGRY HEART. One of the takes of the song played during that gig was officially released later that same year on the Hungry Heart [Berlin 95] EPs and the video was also released later on the on The Complete Video Anthology / 1978-2000 DVD. Liner notes by Bruce Springsteen in the Greatest Hits booklet:

my first real Top 10 smash + I guess my real entrance into the pop main stream. I met the Ramones in Asbury Park + Joey asked me to write a song for 'em. I went home that night + wrote this. I played it for Jon Landau + earning his money he advised me to keep it.
