| Bruce Springsteen (spoken): | | This is a song Joe and I wrote a few years back... |
|
| Joe Grushecky: | | There's a code of silence, we don't dare speak |
| | There's a wall between us and a river deep |
| Bruce Springsteen: | | We keep pretending that there's nothing wrong |
| | Oh, there's a code of silence and it can't go on |
|
| Joe Grushecky: | | Ah, the truth so elusive, so elusive you see |
| | That it ain't enough baby, to bridge the distance they put between you and me |
| Bruce Springsteen: | | There's a list of grievance 100 miles long |
| | There's a code of silence and it can't go on |
|
| Joe Grushecky: | | Well I go to say I'm sorry |
| | But you act like it's all been said |
| | Now 'neath the house I started working |
| | What's going on inside your head |
| | Well I need to know now darlin' |
| | Need to know what's going on |
| | Well come on, come on, come on, come on |
| | Come on, come on, come on |
|
| Bruce Springsteen: | | I go to say I'm sorry |
| | But you act like it's all been said |
| | Now 'neath the house I started working |
| | What's going on inside your head |
| | Well I need to know now darlin' |
| | Yeah, that's right, I know what's wrong |
| Both: | | Well come on, come on, come on, come on |
| | Come on, come on, come on, come on |
| | Come on, come on, come on, come on |
| | Come on, come on, come on |
|
| Both: | | There's a code of silence that we don't dare speak |
| | There's a wall between us and the river's deep |
| | We keep pretending there's nothing wrong |
| | There's a code of silence |
| | And it can't go on |
| Bruce Springsteen: | | Can't go on |
| Joe Grushecky: | | Well it can't go on |
| Bruce Springsteen: | | Can't go on |
|
| Both: | | Can't go on (oh yeah) |
| | And it can't go on |
| | And it can't go on (can't go on, can't go on) |
| | There's a code (can't go on, can't go on, can't go on) |
| | Can't go on (can't go on, can't go, can't go on) |
| | Can't go on, can't so on |
| | Sing! |
| | Aha, aha |
| | Aha, aha |
| | Aha, aha |
| | Aha, aha |
The above lyrics are for the live 04 Dec 2002 performance at Mellon Arena,
Pittsburgh, PA, during The Rising Tour. Springsteen performed the song with co-writer Joe
Grushecky. That was the first time Springsteen and Grushecky have played CODE OF SILENCE live
together, which is notable considering they wrote it together.
In this version, the "Well you walk with your eyes open..." verse is
omitted and replaced by the "Well I go to say I'm sorry..." verse which is unique to
this version only.
Thanks Jake (ol'catfishinthelake from BTX and Greasy Lake) for the lyrics.
