A Darkness On The Edge Of Town outtake of which two "very different" takes are in circulation:

  • Version #1: An early "rough workout" take with very bluffed lyrics that was recorded in Sep 1977 at Atlantic Studios, New York City, NY
  • Version #2: A "more developed" take with nearly finished lyrics that was recorded shortly afterwards at The Record Plant, New York City, NY

BREAK OUT is a machine-gun-quick rocker, and is believed to be an early prototype for BADLANDS. However, this might not be necessary true because the latter was recorded prior to BREAK OUT (Aug 1977). It is also somehow related to PROVE IT ALL NIGHT. These similarities are more apparent in version #2.

BREAK OUT is also known in collector circles under the title ALL NIGHT LONG.

As far as it's known, this outtake was never played live.

The above lyrics refer to version #1, which is much less developed than version #2. It is available on The Lost masters Vol. 3 (Labour Of Love Records) bootleg.
