The first known appearance was on 05 Jan 1985 at the Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA, during a Born In The USA tour show, sound-checked but not performed during the show. The next known performance was during a surprise Halloween party on 31 Oct 1987 at the McLoone's Rumrunner club, Sea Bright, NJ, with the full E Street Band except Nils and Clarence (read below). A famous solo-acoustic performance of the song took place on 18 Jun 1988 at Chateau De Vincennes, Paris, France, during a guest appearance by Bruce and Clarence at the SOS Racism Concert that was broadcasted on French TV. Note that that was Bruce's first live TV broadcast. The above lyrics refer to that version.
The song later appeared on 17 May 1993 at Maimarkthalle, Mannheim, Germany, during the Human Touch tour, sound-checked but not performed during the show. Rehearsed with John Fogerty for the Vote For Change tour on the third and last rehearsal session on 29 Sep 2004 at the Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ. Performed three times during the tour, trading verses with John Fogerty, on:
Also performed with Southside Johnny on 10 Apr 2005 at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ, during the 4th annual Rumson School Benefit Concert. From Brucebase, about the 31 Oct 1987 performance at McLoone's Rumrunner, Sea Bright, NJ: There was another band playing at Mcloone's on this night, and very few people got word that Bruce was gonna show up but they went to the bar which was already packed as it was Halloween and in some cases snuck in as there was no more legal room. Well the band came in all dressed in black and with masks on. They hit the stage and pulled off their masks and, after throwing the other band off, played the above listed set. The guy who was the lead guitarist in the displaced band jumped off stage grabbed a camera that he luckily had with him and shot some pictures. |
