Live 07 Nov 2009 version

[Spoken intro to The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle album performance:]

Thank you, everybody, thanks for being here tonight! We got the last eight shows of our, of our tour going now. We've been on the road for, uh, between these two records, for a couple of years, we appreciate everybody coming out and supporting us, and, uh, as we've gotten toward the close here we were trying to think what we could do that'd be a nice treat for the fans and fun for us. So we've been, uh, playing a variety of different records a night, we've played Born To Run, we've played Born In The USA, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, but tonight, we're gonna do something that's never been done before! Never! Ever! I hope we can do it! (laughs) This was a record, this was the second record that I made, and, uh, it came out, it didn't do that well, um, but it was an interesting record, it was sort of, half of the songs are kind of about, are sort of set in New Jersey and around our little, our little street corner: uh, E Street Shuffle, Sandy, uh, Wild Billy's Circus Story, uh, Rosie, those are all our New Jersey songs. And the other half were sort of my romantic ideas and fantasies of New York City, of Kitty's Back, and New York City Serenade, and Incident. So, uh, here we go! This is, uh, this is The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle!

One, two, three, four

Sandy, the fireworks are hailin' over Little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stoned-out faces left stranded on this fourth of July
Down in town the Circuit's full with switchblade lovers, so fast, so shiny, and sharp
And the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open, like Latin lovers along the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York girls

Well, Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight, for I, I may never see you again
Hey, Sandy, girl
My baby
Hey, Sandy, girl

Well, now the greasers, they tramp the streets or get busted for trying to sleep on the beach all night
Them boys in their spiked high heels, ah, Sandy, their skins are so white
And me, I just got tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades, bangin' them pleasure machines
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk, where they promise to unsnap their jeans
You know that tilt-a-whirl way down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And that Joey kept me spinnin'
I didn't think I'd ever get off

Oh, Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
The pier lights our carnival life on the water
Yeah, running 'neath the boardwalk with my old boss's daughter
Ah, he ain't my boss no more, Sandy

Now, Sandy, that waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me
Yeah, I spoke with her just last night, and she said she won't set herself on fire for me anymore
She worked that joint under the boardwalk, she was always the girl you saw boppin' down the beach with a radio
And last night she was dressed like a star in one of them cheap little seashore bars, parked, makin', with lover boy, out on the Kokomo
Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame Marie for tellin' fortunes better than they do
For me this boardwalk life's through
You know, you ought to quit this scene too

Oh, Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
The pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever
Hey, Sandy, girl
My baby
Hey, Sandy, girl
