VALENTINE is a song written by Nils Lofgren and released on his 1991 album Silver Lining. The above lyrics are for Nils Lofgren's album version of VALENTINE as released in 1991.

Bruce Springsteen contributed to the studio recording of VALENTINE, providing backing vocals on the song. Springsteen joined Nils Lofgren in studio in late 1990 at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, CA, to record his parts. He also appeared in the song's music video, which filmed around the same time.
The studio version of VALENTINE was released in three forms: "album version" [6:12], "edit" [3:50], and "original version" [4:25] (see the singles releases below). The above lyrics are for the "album version". The "edit" fades out at the fifth "Be my valentine" line in the last verse, and the "original version" fades out right after the seventh "Be my valentine" lines in the last verse. They both miss the long guitar outro which concludes the "album version".
