DREAM BABY DREAM

Live 06 Nov 2013 version

[Spoken intro:] Alright, one last bad joke. Uh... Uh, piano player. Piano player out of work, he needs a job, goes uh... down to see the agent. The agent says, "Well let me hear what you hot." The guy playing the piano, playing the piano. It's gorgeous, it's beautiful. He stops, the agent says, "Oh my God, that's, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I ever heard. What's the name of that?" And, "This is something I wrote, it's called uh, 'Take The Stick Out Of Your Ass Because Whether You Know It Or Not You've Been Shit Up To Your Neck'." And the agent says, "Really? Wow! Ok uh, play me another one." He plays another one. Beautiful, I mean the agent is tears running down he cheeks, he says, "Oh my God, that's, that's one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever hear, like, what's the name of that?" He says, "That's called uh, '??? For A Pussy Bandit." And uh... agent says, "Really?" Uh... he says, "I tell you what. I have a job for you. It's a wedding this Sunday. Play the music, but don't mention any of the song titles, alright?" He says, "Sure, no problem, no problem." The guy goes to the wedding, he's playing, they're loving him, loving him, he's fabulous, you know. Uh... during the night finally the bride's come up and says uh, "The bride and groom would like to do their dance, they have a very special request. It's a song that my husband and I danced to at our wedding, it means a great deal to my family." He says, "That's fine. Excuse me, mam, I just have to run to the restroom." He runs to the restroom and he takes a leak but he forgets, forgets to zip up his pants. And he comes out and the... the... the mother of the bride runs up to him and says, "Sir, do you know your flyer's open and your dick is hanging out?" And he says, "Know it? I wrote it!" (chuckles)

I went into the wrong profession, I shoulda, I shoulda done stand up, that's it. Alright, now (clears throat).

Info

The above lyrics are for the live 06 Nov 2013 performance of DREAM BABY DREAM at The Theater At Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY, during the seventh (2013) annual Stand Up For Heroes benefit. The song was played on pump organ.

Bruce Springsteen played a three-song set during the benefit concert: DANCING IN THE DARK, IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND, and DREAM BABY DREAM. Given that the event was part of the New York Comedy Festival, Springsteen preceded each song with a dirty joke. After his set, his guitar was auctioned and realized $250,000 for the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Springsteen had upped the prize to include a one-hour guitar lesson from him, lasagna from his mother, and the opportunity to attend a recording session at his home studio. The complete show was broadcast live on over the internet via YouTube.

Stand Up For Heroes

Stand Up For Heroes is an annual benefit organized by the Bob Woodruff Foundation to raise money for injured U.S. servicemen, veterans, and their families. Robert "Bob" Warren Woodruff is an American television journalist. He was the newly appointed co-anchor of ABC World News Tonight when on 29 Jan 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces in Iraq, he was critically injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and spent 36 days in a medically induced coma. He was not expected to survive, but he recovered and started the Bob Woodruff Foundation, a non-profit helping other Americans who were similarly wounded in war.

Bruce Springsteen has been appearing on almost all of the annual benefits since they started in 2007, playing a handful of songs each time and offering for auction one of his guitars or motorcycles to benefit the foundation.
