ANOTHER THIN LINE

Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers' album version

Joe Grushecky:Gray morning sky
Splits through the shade
Another day come
More time to make
Kids growing up
Cat's getting fatter
Lying here with you
Nothing else matters

Bruce Springsteen:You work hard
Keep your eyes on the prize
Wake up
Joe Grushecky:Wake up
Bruce Springsteen:Makes you open your eyes
Every muscle
Joe Grushecky:Every muscle
Bruce Springsteen:In your body hurts
Stop praying for things to get better
Pray they don't get worse
Grushecky and Springsteen:They don't get worse

Joe Grushecky:Another thin line
Grushecky and Springsteen:I don't dare cross
Joe Grushecky:Another home game
Grushecky and Springsteen:Another close loss
Joe Grushecky:Well, we'll get by
Grushecky and Springsteen:Baby, we'll get by
Joe Grushecky:Baby, we'll get by
Bruce Springsteen:Baby, we'll get by

Joe Grushecky:The work week
Time to move on
Another heartache
Another dream gone
Bruce Springsteen:A cold day
Joe Grushecky:A cold day
Bruce Springsteen:Ain't no sun
No use complaining
Joe Grushecky:No use complaining
Bruce Springsteen:Gotta get the job done

Joe Grushecky:Well it ain't us
Up on the stocks
I stand below
You sit pretty on top
Bruce Springsteen:Well, how long
Before it's my turn
The bottom line's
That souls do burn
Joe Grushecky:Souls do burn
Grushecky and Springsteen:Souls do burn

Joe Grushecky:The money's all gone
Nothing in the banks
Bruce Springsteen:Somebody gets sick
Family closes rank

Christmas is here

Writing

ANOTHER THIN LINE was co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Joe Grushecky sometime between late 1997 and early 2000. In a Spring 2007 interview for Backstreets magazine, Grushecky explained that Springsteen asked him if he had any stuff he thought he could use for rock songs for the E Street Band. This lead to some writing sessions and ANOTHER THIN LINE was something that Grushecky had written and sent to Springsteen long-distance by fax.

Springsteen would later use the lyrics "Gray morning sky / Splits through the shade" in SHACKLED AND DRAWN.
